South Peninsula Volleyball Club hosted a junior volleyball open day in aid of recruiting youngsters from different schools in the city to participate in the sport.
Five teams from South Peninsula High, Star College, Prestwich Primary and two teams from Grassy Park’s EC Primary School took part in the volleyball competition at South Peninsula High School at the weekend.
Chairperson of the South Peninsula Volleyball Club, Mark Williams says the tournament is in its fourth year. The club started in 1999.
“It is a junior tournament that we host every year. We use the tournament as recruiting for our club. It is very difficult to get youngsters to play volleyball,” he says.
Williams says more than 80% of the club’s junior and senior players have achieved provincial status. He says volleyball in the province has been slow over the years. “There are not a lot of clubs that do what we do, most of the clubs are senior clubs and they depend on the schools to do the development.”
They have an academy every Saturday morning from noon to 2pm at the Seawinds multi-purpose centre in Lavender Hill. He encouraged youngsters to participate in volleyball and to work hard. “Talent is nothing unless you practise it,” he said.
