Residents came out in their numbers to support the weekly Mitchell’s Plain Urban Market (MPUM) at Westridge Gardens on Saturday November 11.
The MPUM offers a range of creative products, items, food, and activities. The market opened on Saturday November 4 and is organised by Strandfontein resident Mario Oostendurp, who is the founder of the Proudly Strandfontein civic organisation.
The market had a total of 79 stalls at which shoppers could buy, clothing, a variety of foods and snacks, games, arts and crafts. Mr Oostendurp said the market was growing and added that it was a social enterprise which promoted innovation, sustainability and opportunity for the wider community.
“It is wonderful to see the market coming together. There are so many creative people that would like to showcase their talents and work. The market is here to provide a platform for part-time employment and to display the art of local entrepreneurship. The MPUM aims to offer a decent selection of products, delicious foods at reasonable prices and entertainment which will make it worth the visit,’’ he said.
Mr Oostendurp said they would soon have a fitness programme for the young and old and rides for youngsters. “So far so good, and we would like to encourage people to pop in at the market, there is no entry free and there is parking available,” he said.
The market, he said, would also feature community organisations, as they too had a major role to play in Mitchell’s Plain.
Mr Oostendurp is inviting local aspiring, up and coming entertainers, DJs, bands, poets, singers or dancers to show off their skills at the market.
