Cedar High School pupils were best at articulating their thoughts and acutely explaining their arguments in the annual Westridge library debating competition held at Westridge civic centre on Thursday February 17.
Grade 10 and 11 pupils, from the Rocklands school as well as Rocklands, Portland and Strandfontein high schools were given three topics on the day and limited time in which to prepare arguments.
Westridge senior librarian Muizz Hendricks said the purpose of the competition was to give pupils an opportunity to show off their intellectual prowess.
“Debating enables them to develop essential critical thinking skills – the ability to make reasoned and well thought out arguments in addition to questioning the evidence behind a particular stance or conclusion,” he said.
