In an effort to clamp down on crime, law enforcement authorities participated in an anti-crime operation on Friday October 5, between 10am and 1pm.
Those involved in Operation Squeeze the Space included Mitchell’s Plain SAPS, visible policing units, the City’s Law Enforcement, Metro police and traffic departments, as well as members of local safety structures. The operations were focused on the clamping down on taxi violence and gang violence taking place in the precinct. This included the stopping and searching of taxis for drugs and presumed stolen property as well as compliance with the Road Traffic Act.
Some of the successes reported included about 100 taxis stopped and 36 taxis were searched. A total of 35 fines were issued of which 20 were for unlicensed drivers and 15 for unlicensed vehicles. The total value of the fines issued was R43 600. More than 150 pamphlets were also distributed during the period.
No serious crimes were reported during the period of the operation due to the high visibility and blue light patrols in times executed in convoy by the SAPS members during the course of the operation, said Captain Ian Williams, Mitchell’s Plain SAPS.
