At the monthly meeting of Sub-council 12, held on Thursday February 18, it was announced that the Portland and Rocklands street committee had received 40 jackets and five bicycles from Ward 81 councillor Danny Christians.
After the handover, on Friday February 12, a full “Bobby on the Beat” foot patrol was done with JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security, Mr Christians and 40 street committee members in Portland and Westridge.
Sub-council 12 chair Eddie Andrews said a “Train the Trainer” workshop with neighbourhood watches and street committees would be held. However, the date has not yet been confirmed. Street committee members will be trained and thereafter deployed to their areas of operation.
Social grants
On Monday February 15, a public meeting was held at Portland Indoor Centre with beneficiaries of South African Social Security Agency grants (SASSA) who are experiencing challenges with payments.
Mr Andrews said residents complained that payments were being deducted from their grants, without their consent.
“At the meeting it was strongly reiterated that the practice is illegal and should immediately be reported to Sassa and the Department of Social Development office headed up by MEC Albert Fritz,” he said.
Mr Andrews said the MEC has assigned Llewellyn October to collate and monitor all the concerns raised with respect to illegal deductions. You can call him on 021 483 3555 or email llewellyn.october@westerncape.gov.za
The next Sub-council 12 meeting will take place on Thursday March 17.
