Three Oval North Senior Secondary School pupils won a bursary, an apprenticeship and a computer tablet in the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) career awareness competition.
Education MEC Debbie Schafer and sponsor representatives handed over the prizes during assembly on Monday April 29.
Grade 12 pupil Inga Kock received a one-year bursary, worth R100 000 to study for a Higher Certificate in Information Systems at Pearson Institute of Higher Education. This prize also includes a laptop and textbooks.
Grade 12 pupil Shernice Booysen received an auto electrician or motor mechanic apprenticeship at the Imperial Technical Training Academy in Bellville, while Grade 8 pupil Ammaarah Solomon won the tablet.
They were among the 6 500 pupils who entered the competition to get pupils to engage with the content on five sets of posters in life orientation class. The posters were aimed at changing peoples’ attitudes towards technical and vocational careers and assisting pupils to make informed decisions about their futures.
The competition ran from January 9 until February 28
The WCED Apprenticeship Game Changer is an initiative to ensure there are sufficiently qualified technically and vocationally skilled young people to supply the needs of five prioritised growth sectors in the Western Cape – tourism, oil and gas, agri-processing, and the enabling sectors of renewable energy, and information and communication technology (ICT).
The department aims to produce an additional 11 300 employable apprentices with qualifications by 2019.
