Fun laps, interesting outfits and a vibe of a night under the stars is set to help raise funds for cancer.
These are just a few activities planned to keep participants moving during the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) Relay for Life Mitchell’s Plain at Westridge High School on Friday March 3.
Team captains have been attending regular planning meetings to ensure the most money is raised and fun had at the annual memorial night fund-raiser, the message being of keeping awake because cancer never sleeps.
There will be entertainment, lighting of candles and the luminaria ceremony.
The local Relay For Life overnight event during which teams of 10 to 15 people spend a minimum of 12 hours walking or running around a track finishes on Saturday February 4.
The track is outlined with personally decorated luminaria bags, in memory of or as a dedication to a special warrior who had lost the battle, in honour of a courageous cancer survivor who is still fighting or who has won the battle against cancer.
The evening starts with a lap by cancer survivors, who are then treated to dinner, while their carers and loved ones continue moving on the track.
On Saturday, the teams discussed this year’s theme “Night of the Stars”, planned a coon carnival lap, a pyjama lap, a pimp your takkie lap and a charitable lap.
Local chairwoman Saadiqa Abrahams encouraged teams to join and visitors.
“Come out in your numbers. Feel the spirit that the relay is back (after the national Covid-19 lockdown) and bring out the stars so we can get the message of the theme,” she said.
The relay celebrates the lives of cancer survivors, inspires the public to become involved in cancer advocacy efforts and makes important services possible for patients and their families.
