After a successful Mitchell’s Plain Festival last year, organisers expect 40 000 people to walk through the gates at Westridge Gardens for this year’s event.
This year marks the ninth festival, of which the Plainsman os the media print partner, and will take place from Friday December 1 to Sunday December 3.
The organisers, Cycle of Life, will use this year’s event to promote HIV/Aids awareness through the Red Friday campaign, which falls on World Aids Day, December 1.
Festival director Rozario Brown said that after an absence of more than seven years, there would be a Miss and Mr Teen Festival.
“We are aiming to involve most of the high schools in and around Mitchell’s Plain. We will also see the return of the hugely popular Miss Junior Festival and Glamorous Granny spectacular.
“Each of these competitions will come with great prizes and huge surprises. Our main objective in reviving these competitions is to ensure maximum audience participation in the weekend’s festivities, but also to support our Red Friday campaign,” he said.
The campaign would encourage people to be more supportive of those infected and affected by HIV/Aids.
“Those attending the Mitchell’s Plain Festival will be encouraged to wear red throughout the weekend,” he said.
More than 40 percent trading and exhibition space has been booked or sold, said Mr Brown.
