A group of Westridge residents is reaping the benefits of having dug trenches, worked the soil, and planted seeds and seedlings.
The three-month-old garden at Dagbreek community hall was a hive of activity on Saturday, as the gardeners tended to their project.
The garden has raised beds of vegetables and herbs planted by residents of Kronendal Block who hope to sustain their community with fresh organic produce.
Group leader Shireen Pijoos said the day’s activities were geared to building a community centred around the garden.
“We want to rope in the youngsters so that they can realise the benefits of growing one’s own food and instilling a pride that they contributed to improving their environment,” she said.
The block has been hosting monthly workshops to encourage communities to have their own home gardens. For more information, call Ms Pijoos at 082 624 4032.
