A New Woodlands’ couple hosted a weekly five-a-side soccer tournament for youth in the area, on a field bordered by Hans Aschenborn and Walter Battiss roads.
Coach Jeremy Simons and his wife Tersia also feed up to 90 boys, aged between seven and 15, when they are able to.
“We try not to eliminate the youth of tomorrow. We try to keep them busy so that they are not infiltrated by gangs and crime,” Mr Simons said.
They have floating trophies, cones, a few soccer balls and bibs, which were sponsored by MH Panel Shop, in Beacon Valley.
“We would like the community to support the children. Let them see they belong to something and that the people care for them. They can dream big if they know the community is behind them,” he said.
“We are trying to build a community where we rather keep our kids occupied with sports rather than gangsterism, drugs and violence,” he said.
