The City of Cape Town’s solid waste department will be removing washed up seal carcasses at Strandfontein Beach.
The False Bay coastline is home to a colony of more than 5 000 seals and during summer many dead seals wash ashore.
They are usually young seals, who had been recently weaned and were vulnerable to drowning, when there is strong east winds, which cause choppy seas.
Felicity Purchase, mayoral committee member for transport and urban development, said it is a completely natural event and that the municipality removes hundreds of carcasses every year.
To report carcasses on the beach, send an SMS with a maximum of 160 characters to 31373.
