Three Mitchell’s Plain schools came back with honours after taking part in the SAPS Nelson Mandela Bay Annual Marching Band Competition held in Port Elizabeth on Saturday August 11.
As winners and runners-up in last year’s Mitchell’s Plain SAPS Schools Marching and Drilling competition, the three schools – Spine Road High School, Harvester Primary School and Liesbeek Primary – along with Elsies River High School, participated in the recent competition.
Harvester Primary was the overall winner and surpassed their competitors with their grand march pass, exhibition and drum major.
Liesbeek Primary School was a runner up and won the best dress category, took second in the grand march pass and third in the drum major category. Spine Road High School won third position and Elsies River took seventh place.
In last year’s Mitchell’s Plain competition, Elsies River High and Spine Road High were winners and runners-up respectively in the high school section, while in the primary school section Harvester took honours, followed by Liesbeek Primary.
This year hundreds of pupils, representing 22 primary and high schools, from Mitchell’s Plain, Steenberg, Lotus River, Elsies River, Vredendal, and as far as Plettenberg Bay and Port Elizabeth, are due to drill and march their hearts out at the Soccer Oval, at the Stephen Reagon sports field in Westridge on Saturday October 13, from 8am.
Entry is free and all children will be tagged by Mitchell’s Plain police station’s child rapid response unit (CRRU), which consists of the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF) volunteers who have been screened and trained in Level 1 First Aid, crime scene management, and search and rescue protocol.
The competition’s local organising committee (LOC), includes representatives of Mitchell’s Plain police, the Mitchell’s Plain CPF, Mitchell’s Plain Neighbourhood Watch Association and co-ordinator Midea Events.
