Four men between the ages of 23 and 28 were arrested for stealing a laptop bag containing R50 000 at Westgate Mall on Tuesday July 19.
A business owner from Phillipi area was on his way to the bank at Westgate Mall to deposit money around 2.20pm.
When he left his car, he was approached by two men, one standing next to him demanding all his belongings. When the victim refused and pushed the man away, the second man came closer, pointed a gun at him and demanded his car keys.
Security guards in the parking area noticed something was wrong and started chasing the robbers.
The guards caught one of the robbers and with the help of Lentegeur and Mitchell’s Plain police officers they caught the other.
The police’s investigation revealed that more than the two men on the scene had been involved. They used one of the robbers phone to send a message asking to be collected at the fire station.
Two police officers then waited inside the fire station and short while later a black VW Golf stopped in front for the pick-up.
Police arrested two more suspects who were in the car, which was found to have been involved in other crimes as well.
They will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery and attempted hijacking.
