Mitchell’s Plain karate champion, Cassidy Williams, 11, from Portland, won two gold medals, one for Kumite, and one for Elite Kata, at the Karate South African Elite and Open Competition in Durban, which took place on Friday July 15 and Saturday July 16. Cassidy, who attends Karate Zen in Beacon Valley, was chosen to compete in the national karate competition. She will be competing in Bloemfontein in August, and then at the World Karate Federation in Dubai in January next year if her parents can raise enough funds to send her on the trip. Cassidy’s mother, Shirlyn Williams, will be having a fundraiser for her next competition on Friday July 29, from 5.30pm, where she will be selling braai chicken, chips and salad for R35, and steak rolls with chips for R40. Cooldrinks will also be on sale. Anyone who is interested can place an order by tomorrow, Thursday July 28. To donate or assist with fundraising call Ms Williams at 082 832 8057, or email her at shirlynwill@gmail.com
