Two men were injured and several homes were destroyed when a fire ravaged Kapteinsklip informal settlement, in Tafelsig, on Saturday January 22.
The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service received an emergency call at 10.16pm, informing them that several informal structures were alight. Residents organised themselves and evacuated the settlement immediately after smelling and seeing smoke.
Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said crews from Mitchell’s Plain, Macassar and Mfuleni were on scene with a total of five firefighting appliances and 20 staff members.
A man had a cut on his forehead and another had burn wounds on his chest and back.
The fire, the cause of which is unknown, was extinguished two hours later, said Mr Carelse.
Tafelsig ward councillor Washiela Harris said: “ It’s very sad. The shacks are too close together and we are waiting on the fire report for more clarity.”
