Mitchell’s Plain police arrested a 35-year-old alleged gang member in Kerrim Street, Beacon Valley, for being in possession of a Walther 7.65 pistol with two live rounds of ammunition on Friday April 7 at 9.20am.
Officers were doing a routine crime prevention patrol when they saw the man walking in the street and stopped and searched him.
He will soon appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
A man, 35, was arrested on an open field in Hull Street, Eastridge, on Wednesday April 5, for being in possession of 378 small packets of tik and one parcel of dagga.
Police members were doing a routine crime prevention patrol when they saw the man on the field and searched him.
Mitchell’s Plain station commander Brigadier Cass Goolam said the police will work tirelessly to clamp down on crime in the area.
He thanked the members for their alertness and dedication.
“We urge the community to form part of the (crime-fighting) structures and to contact their respective sector commanders with information about crime,” he said.
Two people died and two were injured in a vehicle collision at the corner of Silversands Avenue and Eisleben Road in Portland on Thursday April 6 at 7.30pm.
Members of the Lentegeur Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling when they flagged a VW Polo and wanted to search it.
The car sped off and police gave chase.
The car, with four inhabitants including the driver, jumped the red traffic light and collided with a courier bakkie carrying three people.
The driver and passenger of the VW Polo were declared dead on the scene and the other two passengers were taken to hospital.
According to police, the people in the bakkie were injured and taken to hospital.
Mitchell’s Plain spokesman Captain Ian Williams said the VW Polo was found to be stolen in a Cape Town Central case. The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
