Police arrested three men over the weekend on charges relating to the possession of drugs and firearms.
In the latest incident, on Friday August 10 at 6pm Lentegeur police received information about a suspect that had a firearm in his possession in Linaria street, Lentegeur.
Police saw a male who started running into the house when he saw the police vehicle.
The officers arrested the suspect, searched him, and found a black 9mm firearm with serial number filed off with magazine containing seven live 9mm rounds and a sock containing loose rounds – five 38 special rounds and eight 9mm rounds in his possession. Police arrested a male, 31. The suspect, a gang member, faces a charge for possession of illegal firearm and possession of ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
In another incident, police arrested an alleged gang member in the early hours of Sunday morning August 12 for possession of a firearm of which the serial number had been filed off. When police arrested the man in Bietou Street, Eastridge, they also seized a .38 calibre revolver with six live rounds.
On Saturday August 11 at 4.45pm, police received information that firearms and ammunition were being stored at a house in Tempest Street, Rocklands. When they searched the premises, officers found a Walther semi-automatic pistol with five live rounds of ammunition, and arrested a 50-year-old man.
On Friday August 10 at 10.50pm, police arrested man, 23, for dealing in drugs in Piccadilly Street, Portland after they noticed two suspicious looking men in the street. When police approached the men, they ran into a known drug house and officers pursued them on foot.
One of the men was apprehended inside the house where police confiscated 127 small plastic packets of tik, 22 whole mandrax tablets, a magazine with 12 live rounds of ammunition and R 1 550 in cash.
The drugs have an estimated street value of R 5 000.
All the suspects appeared in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday August 13 on charges relating to dealing in drugs, possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.
On Monday August 13 at 2.20pm police received a complaint about ammunition being held at a house in Maroela street, Eastridge. When police searched the suspect they found three live rounds of ammunition. Police arrested a female, 29. The suspect faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
On Monday August 13 at 7.10pm police received a complaint of a shooting in Blinkwater street, Tafelsig. Police saw a male lying on the ground. The victim had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. The male, 30, was declared dead on the scene. Allegedly the victim had gone to visit his girlfriend when he was shot at by members of a rival gang.
The motive is gang related.
