His videos have gone viral on social media, giving thousands of people a dose of laughter – now a Tafelsig comedian and skit-creative will take his comedy from the internet to the stage.
Shakir Chuqy Hansen will be hosting his production called Chandre’s Big Epic Show at Cedar High School hall on Saturday October 28. Shakir is well known for his comedy videos on social media in which he portrays his alter ego Chandre.
Shakir said Chandre’s Big Epic Show is a fresh Cape Flats-flavoured drama with some stand- up comedy, written and directed by himself.
Among Shakir’s 49 videos on Facebook are That’s What I Like – Boeka, Despacito South African Parody and Baywatch, Cape Town Water Restrictions. Some of his videos been viewed between 10 000 and 30 000 times, with hundreds of likes, shares and comments.
“I challenged myself to create a of kind show that no one has ever experienced before, a show that will take you on a magical journey, and will be hosted by the character Chandre. If you don’t know Chandre yet, she is a typical Cape Flats ‘gham’ woman who stands up for women. She is funny and loves to press the buttons of men.
“As a homebred Cape Flats starlet, Chandre always stays abreast (of the latest trends) and tries keeping up with the Kaapdashians. So she knows all too well about #datastruggles and therefore feels that you no longer have to just daydream about meeting her, or watch clip after clip on social media of her but see her in person,” he said.
Shakir developed a love for drama in his teens, when he was a pupil at Tafelsig High School, from which he matriculated in 2009.
“I hosted shows from 2009 to 2013 but they weren’t well supported. Thereafter I went to North America and spent three years and nine months (on separate occasions) working at the carnivals, which was a great experience,’’ he said.
Shakir writes, shoots and edits his videos. His partner in crime is Dylan Curtis, who is featured in most of the videos. The two shoot just about everywhere in Cape Town, at the beach, hairdresser and even at the shops.
“Our locations include Grassy Park, Heathfield, Mitchell’s Plain and Sea Point, it changes all the time. We enjoy doing videos/parodies a lot, and we are not getting money for it. I even take a taxi to my locations. That’s how much I love doing what I do,” he said.
The show’s line-up includes artists like Devon Saunders of Devdondidit fame, Justin Vega, Broetjie, Dizzy and Sep and Simon. Shakir added that there will be interactive games and prizes to be won at the show.
Tickets cost R60 for seven- to 12-year-olds and R90 for 12 years and up. Children under the age of seven years old do not pay. Tickets can be bought through Computicket or people can contact 064 835 7869.
Tickets will also be sold at the door.
