Pupils of Shining Star Early Childhood Development Centre, in Rocklands, handed out snack packs to the firefighters of Gugulethu and Westridge fire stations to thank them for their service. Protesters in Gugulethu torched their local fire station overnight, on Thursday July 12, as a result of a land dispute, a community leader said. These fire fighters were now sharing a work space in Mitchell’s Plain. The snack packs, including sweets, dried fruit, mebos and nibbles were meant to be had in case of emergency, when the fire fighters were on duty away from the station.
