As part of its 67 minutes of service for Mandela Day, which is marked every year on July 18, Liberty Promenade hosted a food collection drive at the mall, and donated the goods to Meals on Wheels on Tuesday July 18.
When the Promenade’s centre management team previously visited Meals on Wheels in Portland, they learned that the organisation fed up to 9 000 residents every Tuesday and Thursday.
In the spirit of Mandela Day, Liberty Promenade encouraged their suppliers, store owners, staff and shoppers to donate non-perishable food items. The donations received, some of which were given by Plainsman staff, were valued at more than R25 000.
Dorothea Wright, Liberty Promenade’s general manager, said: “It is truly gratifying that, together with our kind sponsors and tenants, we are able to make a small but real contribution to improving the quality of life for some of those around us.
“ We are proud to be associated with these organisations who do so much to uplift those most in need on a daily basis.”
