The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has offered its condolences to the family of Abdul Muttalib Alexander, 19, who died after being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting in Salvia Street, Lentegeur, on Saturday October 21.
Abdul was due to sit for his matric examination, the National Senior Certificate (NSC), at Mondale Senior Secondary School in Portland yesterday, Tuesday October 24.
He and his friend Tauheer Samuels, were caught in the crossfire when they went to buy take-aways just before 10pm.
Abdul was shot several times in the head and Tauheer in the hand. Abdul was declared brain dead on Sunday October 22.
Maulana Abdul Khaliq Allie, first deputy president of the MJC, said the community had lost a beacon of light. “Criminals do not have limits when they target, killing innocent human beings,” he said.
Mitchell’s Plain police are calling on anyone with information on the drive-by shooting to come forward.
Captain Ian Williams, spokesman for Mitchell’s Plain police station, said cases of murder and attempted murder were being investigated.
He said four people reportedly got out of a white Golf and started shooting at the victims.

A man, 33, was shot dead at the corner of Tierboskat and Katdoring roads in Eastridge on Saturday October 21 at about 7.30pm.
He was shot in the head, twice in the back, in the stomach and right arm.
Police removed 24 cartridges from the scene, where the man died.
Captain Williams confirmed that the shooting was gang related.
Police are investigating a case of murder.

Two of the 15 state-issued 9mm pistols that disappeared from Mitchell’s Plain police station in August were found in Manenberg and two men have appeared separately at Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
Riedwaan Miller, 34, who was arrested on Tuesday October 17 and Donovan Mano, 26, the next day.
Mr Miller is due in court tomorrow Thursday October 26.
One of the 18 firearms handed in as exhibits which could not be accounted for at the Bellville South police station was found. Terence Danin Valentyn, 23, was arrested in Belhar on Sunday October 22 in connection with this case and is due in Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday November 22.
Captain Lloyd Ramovha, spokesman for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), said the men are all still in custody.
Fifteen state-issued 9mm pistols went missing from Mitchell’s Plain police station on Monday August 21 and 18 firearms at Bellville South police station seven days later on Monday August 28.
Subsequently 14 police officers, including Mitchell’s Plain station commander Brigadier Cass Goolam (“Missing guns probe”, Plainsman, September 20), were suspended at Mitchell’s Plain SAPS and three officers at Bellville SAPS.
A total of 53 unlicensed drivers were caught at a single roadblock in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday October 20.
City of Cape Town Traffic Services arrested 22 motorists – 20 for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for reckless and negligent driving, and another for failing to stop when instructed.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security; and social services, said the statistics prove week after week that there is a massive problem. “Whether it is drunk driving or driving without a valid licence, it’s clear that many road users simply have no regard for their own safety or that of others,” he said.
Mr Smith called for more serious sanctions for these transgressions.
The City’s Metro police arrested 63 people during its operations in the last week, including 35 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol and 28 people for being in possession of dangerous weapons and drugs.
A man was arrested on charges of drug possession after a packet of dagga fell out of a man’s pocket, while law enforcement officials tried to stop him from swallowing tik tablets in the Town Centre on Saturday October 21.
