A Westridge boy was one of 36 participants who mastered the basic plumbing skills of repairing a leaking tap, a toilet cistern and general maintenance.
Mogamad-ILYaas, 12, and participants who completed a four-week free community basic plumbing and entrepreneurship course received certificates of attendance at Dagbreek community hall, in Westridge, on Saturday July 30.
The aim of the workshop was to spark ideas through the addition of business planning skills, upskilling and encouraging residents to help themselves and their neighbours. They would be able to sort out basic plumbing problems, when water is running away from the properties; and also become entrepreneurs in providing a service at minimal costs within their community.
The participants had to present their business plans to the group.
Simeon Matiesie, a matriculant from Grassy Park, had the best business plan.
Former Westridge resident Igsaan Hugo, who is also the national product trainer for Cobra Watertech from LIXIL Africa, during a previous course said the community workshops were for all ages and genders but also at women who were in abusive relationships and needed to be independent (“Residents taught basic plumbing skills”, Plainsman September 22, 2021).
Another course is being planned for next month.
