A memorial service was held for Portland resident and community development worker Audrey Evelyn Walters at Lentegeur civic centre on Thursday August 17.
The service was organised by the local government community development department’s Metro 2 Region along with friends, family and colleagues.
Ms Walters, who had worked with Sub-council 12 for 15 years, had been ill before she died on Friday August 11. At the service, mourners described Ms Walters as a soft-hearted, friendly and hardworking woman.
Sub-council 12 chairperson Sheval Arendse said: “She will be missed by family, friends and colleagues. She had good, positive relationships and was always willing to assist.
“Ms Walters was placed in Ward 81 as a community development worker and since her sickness had a desk at the entrance of Sub-council 12.
“She continued until her sickness got the better of her and she was hospitalised. We will always remember Evelyn, one humble and amazing person,” he said.
Colleague Lynn Phillips said Ms Walters had been a woman with noble character and strength. “She was committed to her family, and clients, she had a very special heart for children and the elderly,” she said.
Ward councillor Danny Christians said Ms Walters had been a beacon of light and always had the community at heart. “Rest in peace, Evelyn. You will always be remembered,” he said.
