Part of Strandfontein Beach will be closed intermittently for safety reasons from Monday July 20, while contractors are busy decommissioning the Strandfontein desalination plant, pictured. Xanthea Limberg, the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for waste and water, said the area would be treated as a construction site and that all applicable safety practices and procedures would apply. The beach will be closed to ensure public safety during the dismantling of the temporary Strandfontein desalination plant. The closure of some sections of the beach will remain in place to also allow for the transportation of equipment from the coastal site as it is decommissioned from service. The duration of this process is difficult to forecast as inclement weather and rough sea conditions may cause unforeseen delays, Ms Limberg said. Beaches remain closed to the public under the current level 3 regulations of the lockdown.
