A total of 366 people were arrested for various crimes in the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster between Monday February 13 to Friday February 17.
The police conducted intensive patrols, stop-and-search operations, and raids.
A total of 285 suspects were arrested for drug-related crimes and 99 drug houses were searched. Thirteen suspects will appear in court for the illegal possession of firearms, with 25 illegal firearms and ammunition having been confiscated during the same period.
Fifteen suspects were arrested for crimes against women and children and 92 related cases were reported.
The police also arrested 52 wanted suspects during 11 tracing operations. Seven second-hand goods premises were visited as well as 588 spaza shops.
Five suspects between the ages of 25 and 31 were arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm in Korfbal Street, in Beacon Valley on Tuesday February 14.
Mitchell’s Plain police found a silver and black 7.65 Pietro Berretta with a magazine, hidden between the clothes in a cupboard. They also found seven dagga stoppe.
The five face charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and being in possession of drugs.
Mitchell’s Plain police station commander Brigadier Cass Goolam encouraged the community to exercise responsible firearm ownership, ensuring that firearms are kept in a safe place and to immediately inform the police if they are lost or stolen.
Two men were arrested for housebreaking and theft on Monday February 13. The suspects are expected to appear at Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court soon.
A man, aged 30, was arrested for being in possession of a Taurus 9mm pistol with the serial number that had been removed, containing a magazine and 15 live rounds, in Oudtshoorn Way in Portland, on Sunday February 12. The police saw two men on a motorbike and stopped them and searched the suspects.
He is expected to appear at Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court soon.
