Pupils at Al-Azhar Primary school raised more than R91 000 for Palestinians in Gaza.
They handed R91 549.70 in cash, in a box, to Sheikh Ebrahim Gabriels, head of the Al Quds Foundation South Africa at the school’s neighbour Masjidul Khair, in Rondevlei, on Monday June 7.
Sheikh Gabriels acknowledged their contribution to the preservation of Masjidul Aqsa by giving them a framed photograph of the mosque in Jerusalem.
Last week the pupils, parents and teachers rolled up their sleeves to bake, cook and sell cakes, boerewors rolls and sweets at a two-day market hosted at the school.
The greater Cape Town community were able to shop during and after school hours.
The market was split over two days in line with Covid-19 protocol at school.
Ragmat Petersen, head of the academic department, said the Grade 7 pupils had decided to host the fundraising event following the continuous killing of Palestinian children.
