Katie Plaatjies, 66, from New Woodlands died.

A New Woodlands woman who served her community with joy died on Friday August 9.

Katie Plaatjies was married to pastor Nicolaas for 42-years.

He said his wife was “very loyal” and always went the extra mile for anyone who knocked on their door.

He said prior to joining Northwood Diabetic Club nine-years ago that Ms Plaatjies and about five of her friends would make soup and share it with their neighbours.

“I had a very good wife. She was loyal. We ate all of the bags of salt and pushed all of the boulders out of our way. We had a very good understanding,” he said.

Mr Plaatjies said: “We knew we were borrowed to each other but I do feel she is gone too soon.”

Club coordinator Bernie Gelant said Aunty Katie, as she was fondly known, shared tears and laughter with club members.

“She was a very soft spoken person,” she said.

Ms Gelant said Ms Plaatjies, who had been ill for about a year, had good and bad days but would hardly skip a meeting.

“Aunty Katie fought the good fight.

“She has finished the race and has kept the faith,” she said.
