Rezhano du Bois, 12, a Grade 7 pupil at Tafelsig Primary School, is contemplating his next move, ahead of Saturday’s Powerathlon competition, at Westridge Gardens, between 10am and 4pm.
The youngster will be the one to beat on Saturday May 15 as he had won two previous competitions, one in November and one in February, says organiser Chadwin Fourie.
Powerathlon involves seven board games collectively known as Mental Disciplines (MD7) and includes chess, checkers, Morris12, OXO, Numerator, Roller and Sacow. The games cover a range of numeracy and literacy challenges and contestants are expected to compete in all disciplines.
Ten Powerathlon athletes representing schools in Mitchell’s Plain are set to go head-to-head for the R250 prize money. Points are awarded per win and whoever scores the most overall will be declared the winner.
Fourie said that at a higher level of the sport, the mental disciplines are combined with physical disciplines which includes powerlifting. He said the aim is to get more schools involved but that they are struggling to raise funds for training and competition boards. For more information or if you can help, call 072 722 1379.
