The club’s fine run in this year’s Coke Cup competition continued at the weekend when they beat Rygersdal FC 2-0 in a quarter-final clash, in Khayelitsha.
The game was played at a rapid pace with the Rondebosch side causing all sorts of problems in the opening stages of the match.
However, Spurs midfielder Tohier Martin found the back of the net in the 21st minute following a miscommunication between Rygersdal goalkeeper Kashief Trumpeter and his defender.
The goal was just what Spurs needed to get their motor running
Rygersdal kept pressing for the equaliser, keeping Spurs goalkeeper Morgan Schultz busy between the sticks. The score was 1-0 going into the break. Winger Shane Jacobs sealed the game for Spurs when he scored his side’s second goal midway through the second half.
“Our defence were caught on a number of occasions but our goalkeeper was solid. Rygersdal has been one of our tougher oppositions in this year’s competition,” said Spurs coach Oswald Sauls.
Spurs will either face Bishop Lavis’ United FC or Heideveld’s Young Pirates in the semi-finals, on Sunday September 25, depending on the outcome of today’s quarter-final match between United and Pirates.
* In other Coke Cup action, a gutsy last-minute goal spoiled the party for Glendene United when Melchester Rovers beat them 5-4 on penalties after the sides played to a 2-all draw.
Mellies will now face a rampant Two for Joy in the semi-finals, on Sunday, September 25.
