A Tafelsig man hosted a cancer awareness lunch at Mitchell’s Heights Primary School, to honour his mother who died about a decade ago.
Mogamad de Villiers has been hosting lunches for elderly women since his mother Fatima de Villiers died in 2009.
“I just want to serve the people a good meal and see them have a good time,” he said.
Guest speaker Saadiqa Abrahams of Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) Relay for Life Mitchell’s Plain, encouraged grandmothers, mothers and women to go for health checks and to speak to their doctors because early detection of diseases like cancer could save their lives.
She said parents and caregivers should not brush aside children’s complaints of a constant headache, stomach pain or falling over as these could be warning signs of a serious health condition.
Ms Abrahams relayed stories of children as young as one dying of cancer.
She invited attendees to participate in the annual Relay for Life event.
“Let’s not wait for it to be our turn. Let’s give back and keep the ball rolling,” she said.
She said the money raised was used for volunteers to render a service or help feed patients in Mitchell’s Plain.
