Greenwood Athletic are through to the next round of the Bayhill under-19 Premier Cup play-offs following a 1-0 win over Wanderers Football Club at the William Herbert Sports Complex in Wynberg on Sunday, January 28.
Striker Jordan Davidson from St Montague Village netted a late first half goal to send Greenwood to round six of the play-offs, in Wynberg, this coming weekend.
Under-19 coach, Chadwin Lotters is confident in his team’s ability to make it all the way to the winning stages of the Bayhill tournament, held over the Easter weekend , at Erica Park, in Belhar.
“The goal is to remain unbeaten this year. The first step is to qualify. I know its not going to be easy. It has never been easy for us,” he said.
The Green Machine are the reigning champions of the Dennis Golberg Cup. They finished third in the Cape District Local Football Association last year. At the end of the year, after school exams, they immediately continued preparations for the Bayhill tournament.
“Moving forward, we want to work on not missing chances. We were lucky to have the upper hand with the goal in the game against Wanderers but we missed far too many chances.We want to improve on that this week,” said Lotters.
Meanwhile, Hanover Park Football Club advanced into the next round of play-offs with a 3-2 penalty shoot win following a 1-1 draw against Salt River Celtics Football Club. Westridge Football Club beat Ashford 1-0. FC Kapstadt won 2-1 against Ulana Academy. Ubuntu Academy won 2-1 against Stephanians Ottery. Junction Rovers made it through to the next stage with a 2-1 win over Robinvale. Northpine took a 5-4 penalty win against Eagles after a 2-2 draw at the end of the match.
Maties FC, Lansur United, Eyethu FC and FC Porto advanced onto round six of the play-offs after beating Valhalla United FC, Santos, Jomo’s Power and Salt River Blackpool.
Elsies River beat JL Zwane 2-1. Clover were 2-1 victors over Barca Juniors and Everton FC won 2-1 against Grove Academy.
Young Bafana put four unanswered goals past Ravensmead. Manenberg won 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw against Hellenic FC. Antalayaspor JPM won 3-0 against Masithandane. Houtbay United won 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw against Liverpool FC.
Rygersdal and Matroosfontein are through to the next round after beating Tafelzucht (2-1) and CMES Academy 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw. FN Rangers won 4-2 on penalties. Ocean View lost 1-0 to Rebels. Premier United beat City Bombers 2-0. SSS Academy were 2-1 victors over Saxon Rovers FC.
