The side, as it was the case last year, looked like a well-oiled machine, cruising to the final. And, when the chips looked to be down, their 16-year-old goalkeeper, Duwayne Davids, came to the rescue, producing match-winning performances.
He kept six clean sheets in seven matches in the competition – he only conceded in the final. It was, then, no surprise that the Glendale High School pupil walked away with the goalkeeper of the tournament award. He was, by far, the best goalkeeper in the competition.
His coach, Neil Smith, described him as one of his side’s special players.
“Duwayne has been with us for four years now and, ironically, was a striker.
“I played him, in his first game for us, as a striker and was not convinced. I also tried him at right back and he was still not convincing. Some players, then, started mentioning something about goalkeeping,” he said.
