Valerie Petersen, from Hanover Park, has been named as one of the women selected to represent the African Darts Group, in Florida, in America, in August.
Petersen, who has been playing darts since 2010, is a member of the Western Cape Wizards Darts Franchise, established by Portland resident Devon Petersen (no relation), who now plies his trade on the European pro circuit.
She recently finished second in the women’s finals of a franchise tournament, in Gqeberha, finishing among the highest scorers in the first season of the African Darts series, to secure her spot on the Florida-bound squad.
However, each player is responsible to raise their own funds in order to get there, which led to a frantic fundraising campaign in the Petersen household.
As a small business owner, she manages to squeeze in a bit of practice in the early hours of the morning, in the kitchen where the family has a dart board, while baking pies and muffins to put food on the table and to raise a bit of much-needed cash.
