With the Springboks and the All Blacks set to do battle in their second Rugby Championship match at the Cape Town Stadium this weekend, local clubs are gearing up for the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) finals set to be played at City Park on Saturday September 14.
It has certainly been a successful season for the Primrose who gained promotion to the Super League B after clinching a 24 -13 win over Goodwood at City Park, at the weekend. They will now meet Macassar in the final, who beat Atlantis 30-17.
Primrose coach Ricky Petersen paid tribute to the clubs’ forward-thinking executive. “They bought into the idea of a collective approach. Success is not a one-man show. It needs a buy-in from the club officials, players, coaches and the supporters. Once you have this on cohesion then you can achieve success,” he said.
“From a personal perspective, yes, I feel honoured to have coached another team to success. But it does not end here. Next week we have the final and then we plan for next year,” said Petersen.
In other action, both the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and Van der Stel/Evergreens have won promotion to the Super League A. The two teams will, however, now meet in the Super League B final. Van der Stel beat Kraaifontein 36-34 while UWC ran out 34-11 winners against Franschhoek.
The Super League A final will be contested by Hamilton and Durbell. Hamilton beat Maties 33-19 while Durbell edged-out Uni-Mil 22-19 in a closely contested match at City Park B- field.
Meanwhile, SK Walmer will have another crack at retaining their Super League A status after ending in the relegation zone.
It has certainly been a topsy-turvy season for the men from the Bo-Kaap, after ending in 13th place in their return season to the Cape’s top division. This season they could only manage to win three out of their 14 league games.
Coach Ashieq Wise and his side will now have to square-off against the winners of the Franschhoek and Kraaifontein encounter. This match between Franschhoek and Kraaifontein will be played at City Park next week.
