I woke up this morning, grateful to be alive.
The night was dark and dreary but somehow we survived.
I left my home this morning. Everyone was fine.
The children on their way to school, me in the taxi line.
People started talking, the way that people do.
Something on the socials, just came through.
All I heard was ‘accident’ … ‘Promenade’… ‘Mitchell’s Plain’!
All that I could think was, ‘Dear Lord, not again!’
Someone else said ‘bakkie’ … ‘5 children dead’!
Something inside me shuddered! Thoughts racing through my head.
My child is on a bakkie. On his way to school!
I prayed it was not them, the news was about.
Then I saw the pictures … all I could do was shout!
I left my house this morning. Everything was fine.
Here I am standing in the mortuary line.
