Forty young people from Ward 116 took part in a youth leadership programme at the Lentegeur Sub-council chambers on Thursday June 27.
Ward 116 includes parts of Beacon Valley, Montrose Park, The Farm, Montclair and Mandalay.
Discussions included identifying the challenges youth and their communities face, accessing services and employment opportunities.
Guest speakers included Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz; the DA’s provincial youth leader and proportional representative (PR) councillor Carl Pophaim; mayoral committee member for urban management, Grant Twigg; and representatives from Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator.
Ward 116 councillor Michael Pietersen, said it was important to bring the youth together and help them be self sustainable.
“We want youth to have a voice, specifically in Mitchell’s Plain, to get them talking and find out what they want from the government,” he said.
Mr Pietersen said he will avail his office, in the Town Centre, to them and that he would like to meet with them in two months’ time to perhaps form a youth desk.
