Sixty young people from Mitchell’s Plain celebrated Youth Month by attending the annual Decision Affects Destinies (DAD) youth mentor camp, on Tuesday June 28, at the City of Cape Town’s Monwabisi Resort. The camp was funded by the budget of Ward 78 – which includes Westridge, Westgate, Portland, Rocklands and Beacon Valley – and facilitated by the City of Cape Town’s social development and early childhood development and nature conservation departments. Partnerships with Cape Town Counselling Centre, Nursing Works, Abbotts College and Children In Action were also secured. The camp focused on three pillars – self, family and community – with daily themes being attitude, boldness, confidence and decision making. Under the family pillar, parents were invited to visit the camp and participate in a cook off with their child. Eddie Andrews, the chairman of Mitchell’s Plain’s Sub-council 12, concluded the camp by highlighting the importance for all ambassadors to adhere to a DAD Pledge in every situation they may find themselves in.
