In celebration of Youth Day, marked on June 16, NPO Project 021, in partnership with the Cape Town Museum of Childhood, hosted a youth stage production and exhibition, Given to Fly, at the Bellville civic centre on Friday, June 17. With cast members from Belhar, Kuils River, Khayelitsha, Heideveld, Lavender Hill, Wynberg, Lotus River and Mitchell’s Plain, Given to Fly is set in Manenberg and tells the story of a Cape Flats family. Filled with high energy singing and dancing to local and international hit songs, the production addresses some of the social ills of life on the Cape Flats, such as rape, gangsterism and poverty, but it is also filled with a lot of humour and wit.
