Dancers from across the world took part in the inaugural all genre CIAD International Dance Competition held at Zwaanswyk Academy, in Retreat, on Sunday March 25.

Hip hop, ballet, ballroom, contemporary and belly dancers from Argentina, Brazil and across Cape Town participated in the competition.

CIAD is an institution belonging to an international network affiliated to a professional union of dancing and their affiliate members.

Their objective is to promote, develop and grow all dance forms across the globe and to achieve harmony and unity through arts and culture. They also seek to unearth new talents, while facilitating professional development locally and internationally.

They have hosted numerous events around the world, but it was the first time they brought all dance genres together.

Adjudicators included Professor Rodolfo Solmoirage, from Argentina; Cecil Jacobs, from Strandfontein, who teaches classical ballet in accordance with London-based Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), Surika Arendse, renowned belly-dancer from Johannesburg; and Andrea Soledad Olmeda, from Argentina.

Stephanie Singh, from Aphrodite belly-dance studio, in Strandfontein, was the co-ordinator and director of the competition.

She said the competition’s success was a culmination of hard work by the dance studio members, their parents and teachers.
