To celebrate World Book Day, City libraries will host a storytelling festival on Thursday April 21.
Hundreds of pupils from Grades 1 to 3 can join Central library in the Company’s Garden for the library’s storytelling festival. World Book Day is on Saturday April 23.
The event will feature special guest Len Keating who will entertain pupils with Xhosa and English puppet shows.
He will be joined by other storytellers.
Mayoral committee member for community services and special projects Belinda Walker said commemorating World Book Day helped to raise literacy levels.
“When we read to our children from a young age, we encourage them to become enthusiastic students and confident readers, writers and speakers. Literacy is a tool that can be used to empower oneself and, in turn, others. It unlocks a door to learning that, once opened, can never be closed again. Once the mastery of the basics occurs – reading, writing and articulation – they can access information and engage with others in a manner that can broaden horizons and present new and different opportunities,” she said.
Ms Walker said this year’s World Book Day celebrations would also feature an edition of the popular Pulp Fiction Project, in which books that would normally have gone for pulping are rescued.
The project is in its fourth year and this year 20 000 romance novels will be distributed to libraries around the city. As with previous editions of Pulp Fiction, avid readers and patrons are invited to take books away when the installations at the libraries reach their end.
