Mitchell’s Plain women prayed and rejoiced in honour of the 90th anniversary of the Women’s World Day of Prayer in South Africa.
They came from different churches to congregate at the Christ the Mediator Anglican Church in Wall Street, Portland, on Friday March 6.
The worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday of March every year.
Each year women from a different country prepare the programme, which is translated into eight languages in South Africa.
This year’s programme was set by women from Zimbabwe, who decided on the biblical theme “Rise! Take Your
Mat and Walk”, which is explained in a booklet and is read from on the day across the world.
It comes from the Gospel
of John, chapter 5 verses 2 to 18, which teaches people to look at their circumstances differently and realise with
the help of God they could
actively do something to change it.
This was one of the messages the script writers had wanted to share in scripture readings, song and greeting traditions, to foster relations and encourage the women to pray for each other.
The next monthly interdenominational service of the Women’s World Day of Prayer will be at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa Mitchell’s Plain, 52 Durban Way in Portland, on Tuesday April 7 at 10am. All are welcome.
