Mitchell’s Plain police arrested a 34-year-old man for being in possession of a firearm with five rounds of ammunition, in Korfbal Street, Beacon Valley, around 8pm on Monday November 13.
Police searched the man during routine crime prevention operations and found that he did not have a valid licence for the firearm, and that its serial number had been removed.
He faces charges of possession of prohibited firearm, tampering with a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
According to the police, the suspect is not a gang member.
Mitchell’s Plain acting station commander, Colonel Jan Alexander, encouraged firearm owners to be responsible with these weapons and to ensure they are stored in a safe. “Ensure that the key is in a safe place or (that) the code is kept secret. Keep firearms away from children. Report any loss immediately,” he said.
A 23-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of 9mm rounds of ammunition in Fiat Street, Rocklands, around 1.30pm on Tuesday November 14.
The man, a suspected gang member, faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition and appeared in court on Thursday November 16.
