Three people were killed in a collision in Baden Powell Drive while three others were left injured.
Mitchell’s Plain SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ian Williams, confirmed the incident took place on Saturday October 23 at 3pm when they received a complaint of the crash in Baden Powell Drive, Rocklands.
On arrival they noticed two vehicles involved in a collision – an Isuzu KB300 bakkie and a white Peugeot. The white Peugeot was parked along the yellow lane in the road when the bakkie collided with the Peugeot, said Captain Williams.
A woman, 50, and a man, 30, died of the impact while a 4-year-old girl sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital under advanced life support interventions for urgent medical care. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving at the hospital the child was declared dead. The deceased were travelling in the white Peugeot.
Other passengers in the white Peugeot who sustained injuries were a woman, 29, a five-month old baby girl, and a man, age unknown.
The driver of the bakkie and the passenger in the bakkie sustained slight injuries.
When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 3pm, Metro EMS as well as local authorities were already on the scene. Upon further assessment, two people were found to have sustained fatal injuries, confirmed Ineke van Huyssteen, ER24 spokesperson.
Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead at the scene, she said.
One patient was found entrapped in the vehicle and had sustained serious injuries. Mitchell’s Plain Fire extricated the patient using the jaws of life.
Another patient sustained moderate injuries, while a 5-month-old baby sustained minor injuries. ER24, as well as Metro EMS and Life Healthcare, treated the patients at the scene before transporting them to hospital for further medical care.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not known to our paramedics, Ms Van Huysteen said.
The Plainsman reached out to the deceased’s family who said via a family spokesperson that they were not going to release any information relating to the gruesome incident.
The driver of the bakkie was arrested and faces a charge of culpable homicide. He is still to appear in court.
