Teacher takes top award

Andre Rix.

Andre Rix of Lentegeur says his recent win of the prize for the top high school teacher of the year was among a string of many other awards he took home this year.

“2017 has been a blessed year for me,” he said.

The Westridge High School teacher said he initially didn’t get too excited about the win but later when messages of congratulations started pouring in and he saw his picture in the Cape Times he realised: “Wow this is big. It still feels unreal.”

The energetic cyclist, runner and minstrel has won several other awards this year, mostly in the athletics and minstrel arena but this award, has made him ask: “What did I do right?”

Mr Rix is a Grade 12 mathematics teacher at Westridge High School.

Congratulating Mr Rix at the ceremony held at Old Mutual in Pinelands on Friday November 3, Education MEC Debbie Schäfer said: “Committed, passionate, talented, helpful and enthusiastic – these are all words used to describe Mr Rix.

“We received several nominations for Mr Rix, where learners described him as the most ‘unbelievable’ and dedicated teacher they have had in their 12-year school career, making lessons interesting and fun, which has assisted individual learners to achieve better results in maths.”

What’s next for Mr Rix? Well, he has set his sights on the Comrades Marathon.

“If I had entered it this year maybe I would have won because it has been such a blessed year for me. I can only thank the Lord.”
