Joanie Fredericks, from the Tafelsig Community Action Network (CAN), received a R2 000 shopping voucher from Lunga Schoeman, the Shoprite Group corporate social investment manager. The Shoprite mobile soup kitchen also delivered soup and bread for 500 people, to the organisation. The retailer’s network of mobile soup kitchens has delivered over 1.7 million meals and has donated surplus food valued at over R41 million to beneficiary organisations. A social media call by Ms Fredericks to President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighting the plight of the hungry in Mitchell’s Plain went viral and she also teamed up with comedian Marc Lottering and musician Craig Lucas to produce a song to raise awareness about the hungry people in communities across South Africa.
