A total of 591 suspects were arrested for various crimes in the Mitchell’s Plain cluster from Monday January 30 to Sunday February 5.
The cluster consists of Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein, Lentegeur, Steenberg, Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Athlone and Philippi police stations, all which had various crime prevention operations in their respective areas.
According to police 253 suspects were arrested for the possession of drugs which include mandrax, dagga, tik and heroin. A total of five premises were searched for any illegal activities, while 1 500 millilitres of liquor were confiscated as they also clamped down on illegal liquor outlets.
Eighteen suspects were arrested for murder and attempted murder cases and nine people for the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and a prohibited firearm.
A further 292 suspects were arrested for offences, which included being wanted on outstanding warrants of arrest, for burglaries, theft, robbery, assault, possession of stolen property, shoplifting, possession of a dangerous weapon, rape and driving a vehicle while under the influence of liquor.
Vehicle stop-and-searches and check-points were conducted and 13 fines to the value of R13 000 were issued.
Strandfontein SAPS held their first imbizo of the year at Strandfontein High School hall on Thursday February 2.
Strandfontein station commander Captain David Malong gave feedback to the community about the crime for the past financial year.
The community were also given the opportunity to ask questions and give suggestions to improve policing in the area.
Mitchell’s Plain spokesperson, Captain Ian Williams, said the area faces challenges in terms of an influx of opportunists who target fishermen and citizens along the beaches and bus routes. “Safety tips around robberies and housebreakings were shared among the communities and greater participation from the general community was requested,” he said.
A man and a woman were threatened with a firearm by three men at Strandfontein Pavilion on Saturday February 4 at 1.30am. The men demanded their vehicle and pulled the complainant out of her vehicle.
They then drove off with her white Toyota Yaris with registration number CY 90181 in the direction of Old Strandfontein Road towards Grassy Park. The value of the vehicle is estimated at
R142 000.
The suspects also took the complainant’s jewellery valued at R66 000.
No shots were fired and no one has been arrested as yet. Strandfontein police have registered a case of carjacking and the investigation continues.

A 36-year-old man,was approached by four men in Ixia Street, Mont Clair, who pointed a firearm at him on Friday February 3 at 9.15pm. He was instructed to get out of the vehicle and thereafter the suspects took the vehicle and drove away. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.
They drove a white Opel Corsa Lite with no number plates. The hijacked vehicle is a silver grey Toyota Corolla with registration number CF 228-102.
The vehicle belongs to the company, Nation Housing, based in Van Riebeek Road in Kuils River.

A 19-year-old man was arrested in Hengelaar Street, Beacon Valley, on Sunday February 5. for being in possession of a firearm with a magazine and 14 9mm live rounds.
The police spotted the man coming out of a well-known drug house and when searching the suspect they found the firearm concealed under his clothing.
The suspect faces a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
