A Jazz in July extravaganza entertained the crowd on Sunday July 31 in the parking area at Watergate Centre.
The event, hosted by Jazz on the Yard, in partnership with Watergate Centre and Shoprite, celebrated renowned jazz artists and vocalists from the Mitchell’s Plain community and surrounding areas.
The audience jazzed to the soothing sounds of The Collab Band, saxophonist Joshua Davids, vocalist Holly Skye with the Simplicity Band, including upcoming artists of the Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy.
Jazz on the Yard is an initiative started in 2012 by Gino Oliver from his back yard in Bonteheuwel, to create a platform for upcoming musicians. Gino continues to host events at different venues in and around Cape Town to grow confidence in artists and have them easily spotted.
Jazz in July was a first for Mitchell’s Plain, as it was never held at a retail centre before. “We are here to serve and celebrate with our community, and we do that in every way possible” said events team Oliver and Grant Payne, Shoprite manager.
“The event has created a network to engage with many more upcoming local artists who are passionate and hungry to share their talents on these platforms. We are excited for what’s to come,” said Fuzlin Sinclair, Watergate centre manager.
