Mitchell’s Plain police are urging the community to oppose bail for the man accused of murdering a 78-year-old Eastridge woman, and to support her family.
Three men, aged between 23 and 30, and a woman, aged 27, were arrested after it was found that the house of Martha Samuels, 78, had been broken into.
Ms Samuels was found strangled to death on Thursday February 9 at about 8pm.
The suspects are due to appear in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday March 1.
A man, 55, was due to appear in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court yesterday Tuesday February 21, on a charge of being in possession of drugs.
He was arrested during a Lentegeur police station crime prevention operation, at a house in Salvia Street on Monday February 20 at 7.30pm.
The police opened the door and found the man, who allegedly dropped a plastic packet on the floor. Upon investigation, they confiscated 100 units of heroin, with an estimated value of R3 000.
Lentegeur police station commander Colonel Herman Seals thanked the police for a job well done.
“The police will continue working around the clock to prevent and combat crime,” he said.
Mitchell’s Plain police need help identifying a body, found burned beyond recognition on Baden Powell Drive, in Tafelsig on Friday February 17 at noon.
They are investigating a case of murder, but no arrests have yet been made.

Mitchell’s Plain police are also asking the community to bring along the serial numbers of their stolen items, when reporting cases of theft.
It will help with speeding up the identification of stolen property.
