He also provided them with food parcels.
The organisation has since grown with the help of the community, its staff, board members, volunteers, donors and the Department of Social Development.
Mr Lakay said the organisation aimed to empower the poorer communities of Mitchell’s Plain and its surrounding areas through providing basic counselling to families and children; and encouraging the spirit of self-reliance.
“It is our vision to have a self-reliant and safe society. We have adopted a family-centred approach, and aim to preserve families,” he said.
They offer marital counselling, individual counselling, family counselling, step-parent and step-children counselling, and help children to cope with divorce.
Mr Lakay said they also receive referrals from other organisation and in turn they refer clients if they cannot assist
“We have marriage and family enrichment programmes, parental skills workshops, as well as fatherhood rights and responsibilities workshops,” he said.
