The City of Cape Town is offering a R50 000 reward for any information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for a shooting incident that left two Metro police officers and a motorist wounded this morning.
The officers were dispatched to the N2 inbound near Borcherd’s Quarry just after 2am after camera operators detected rocks on the roadway.
While the officers were making their way to the scene, a motorist drove over the rocks and stopped on the side to attend to a burst tyre. While doing so, another vehicle pulled over and one of the occupants shot the motorist.
When the two Metro police officers arrived and enquired about what had happened, the suspects opened fire on them too.
The female officer was wounded in the leg and her colleague was shot in the upper right leg and left side of his groin.
The shooter fled with a firearm belonging to one of the officers, a radio as well as some of their personal belongings. Â
The officers are recovering in hospital.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, said: “We wish them well on the road to recovery. The City will provide trauma counselling and any support they may require.”
The City has condemned the attack and said it will work closely with the police to ensure that the perpetrator is arrested.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the police or the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
